Remnants of a Mezzuzah Parchment

Seven mezzuzah parchments were discovered in Cave 4 (4Q149-55) and one in Cave 8. Mezzuzot are biblical passages affixed to the doorstep. As in the case of tefillin, scholars have questioned how early the observance of these commandments became widespread. The Qumran materials provide the earliest examples, reaching into the Hellenistic and early Roman periods.
