Belvoir Crusader Fortress
The Crusader fortress was built c. 1140 during the reign of Falk Dango (1142-1131), and named Belvoir, meaning "beautiful view." It is located on a steep slope overlooking the Jordan Valley and affords a view of the Gilad mountains in Jordan.
In 1168 the fortress was purchased by the Order of Hospitalers who turned it into the strongest fortress in the Land of Israel. Saladin was able to capture it only after a year-and-a-half-long siege.
This fortress is the best preserved and only fully excavated Crusader fortress in Israel.
